secret royal inspector / 암행어사

I stopped by the Tate Modern on the southbank of the Thames in London for the first time this afternoon. I've been meaning to go since I moved here, especially after I found out that I could spend an entire afternoon wandering amongst modern art for free, but I just never got around to it. Then my very good friend from Seoul, Una Yeyo, recently informed me that a piece she styled which she had me model for was going to be in a Korean magazine called Onepiece / 운피스 and was now available in the Tate book shop. The theme of this issue of Onepiece was 'Boy' (sonyeon / 소년 in Korean) and Una styled me wearing a variety of necklaces and accessories that she handmade specifically for the shoot, which was taken on the rooftop of my old apartment in Seoul overlooking the US army base in the center of the city. Here is what the article had to say:


"Artist Una's first love was in junior high. There was a boy who liked her, from a nearby all boys junior high school where he was the class president. Though he professed just how much he adored her, he never gathered enough courage to actually talk to her, instead asking his friend to send her messages. And so it was the Una spent more time talking with this friend than with the class president, and naturally, she began to like him instead. Yet soon enough, a rumor about her and the class presidents relationship spread, and it became difficult for her to confess her feelings to the friend. All she could do was watch him from afar. In the end, her first love ended as a crush. 'Boy', according to Una, is one who is still innocent enough to be more earnest than an adult, whose imagination has yet been tarnished, who is among the group of individuals who are still searching for self identity, and thus any adult can indeed be a boy anywhere, anytime.


The model in the photographs is an adult white male, but at times, you can discover the boy in him. A man doesn't only appear to be a man, and a boy only a boy. There can be a grown man who seems like a boy, and vice versa. Through this project, Una wanted to merge many different stories. The west and the east, the past and the present, authority and equality - she wanted to include all of these aspects."

hello, stranger: chadchad & friends in vogue girl.

Here is the article myself and a few of my friends were asked to be in for Vogue Girl Korea.  They were looking for foreigners to give a new perspective on what Seoul has to offer.  The images were shot by uber talented Korean photographer Hasisi Park in each of our favorite spots in Seoul, mine being Dongmyo vintage market.  Thanks Burger Kim for the translation:

How long have you been in Seoul? 
I came to stay for just one year, but this is my 4th year.

What were the first things you thought of Seoul?
Neon Signs, street food and knock-off bags. All I knew about Korea was it hosted the Olympics when I was little.

What's one of the most impressive experience you had in Seoul?
I was overwhelmed to see so many people during World Cup last year. I was impressed by the passionate and patriotic atmosphere.

Which adjectives would you choose to describe Seoul?
Addictive, progressive, non-stop

Is there a particular reason you like this place(Dongmyo)?
You can find cheap and unique vintage items. The process of spotting one-of-a-kind items and negotiating price is really fun.

Any item that could be helpful when coming here? 
A Backpack. You need a big and tough bag to carry all the things you buy from here.

Anywhere else you like in Seoul?
The Han river. It's really convenient you can order chicken or chinese food to be delivered to a picnic. Also there are some hidden interesting spots under Seogang bridge.

What would you give your friends back in hometown as presents from Seoul?
I'll give them Hwatu. I love the design so much I even made necklaces out of them. Also, dried squid you can buy from supermarkets. Eating dried squid is a new experience for Canadians. 

What attracts you the most about Seoul?
The street fashion in Myoungdong, Hongdae and Garosu-gil.

jain song fw 2011/12

Jain Song is one of the few womenswear designers from Seoul Collection that I actually look forward to, but unfortunately this year it was a bit of a let down.  The drab colors along with the sombre music made the show a total yawn & the cheap looking zip-up Ugg-like booties made the models look short & almost dumpy.  There were a few saviors however including the tweed short shorts, the oversized knit wear & my personal favorite, the high waisted trench skirt - a gorgeous reinterpretation of the classic trench coat.

alani fw 2011/12 by kim jae hwan

A Central Saint Martins graduate, Korean designer Jae Hwan Kim once again presented a very minimal collection for Alani under the theme 'Yves Klein Monochrome'.  Clean lines in black & grey with solid blocks of intense color inspired by the monochrome paintings of French artist Yves Klein.  A royal, ultramarine blue which Klein made famous as 'International Klein Blue' was the standout color in a few key pieces such as the long, oversized jacket with hidden buttons that I got to wear as the final outfit.  The patent leather shoes were a highlight of the show as were the much talked about, crisp cornered, square legged pants - which you can see more of HERE in Alani's 'Sweatshirt Project' lookbook.
