chadchad of the day 2.6
yellow plaid shirt / reformed vintage
cut off denim / bleached vintage
paint splatter leggings / vintage
blue sneakers / Adidas
purple monster backpack / no brand
Today my friend Cory & I were asked to come up with a street fashion inspired look to wear along with the Kai-Aakmann military jackets pictured above for the April issue of Vogue Girl Korea. She wore the black one while I wore the khaki. Unfortunately I didn't sneak a shot on my iPhone with the jacket on, but they will be sending us each a jacket in the mail soon enough. It actually has a cute 'Kai-Bat' stitched onto the back and is a great light layering piece for spring.
I wore it along with this yellow plaid shirt I reformed to sell at the Bling Night Flea Market at Platoon tomorrow. I sewed a shiny pleather western inspired patch onto the upper left shoulder as well as adding some stud detailing.
These Jackson Pollock-esque leggings are actually an ultra badass unitard complete with shin-pads that I thrifted at Dongmyo flea market for about $1. I wore them under a pair of cutoffs that I dipped in bleach to make a subtle gradation of color from light to dark. I was given the sneakers almost two years ago (yikes!) after modeling for the Adidas 60th Anniversary party at Platoon with a few of my friends. Check out that collection of photos here, it was a ridiculous fun time: http://bit.ly/csFgft
I bought this angry little purple monster backpack for only W12,000 ($12US). I think I'll send it to my baby sister for her 11th birthday. Hopefully she'll be somewhat impressed that it was shown in Vogue Girl, but that's probably unlikely. She's a tough nut to crack that kid.

chadchad is 'Factory Guy' in NYLON Guys Korea!
Chad Burton, featured in last month's Nylon, has sent a reform guide to Nylon Guys.
translation by Burger Kim
We met Chad Burton at his place near Itaewon where we could see his unique taste in things. A stuffed pheasant was standing guard on the A/C and his closet and bedroom were filled with clothes and accessories he had reformed himself. This tall modelesque guy from Canada first came to South Korea to teach English almost 4 years ago. Quite unexpectedly he started modelling, blogging, taking street fashion snaps and sometimes styling and now he is a man of many fashion talents. So it's only natural he met Nylon. Not so long ago his blog thexoxokids.com was featured in Nylon USA and Nylon first met him during last Seoul Fashion Week. Since then he was shown in Nylon's fashion column wearing clothes he reformed and we thought it'd be a shame to leave his reforming talent with just a snap, so we decided to feature him in Nylon Guys as a factory boy.
Chad started styling with reformed clothes to have an original party look. Now his reformed items are popular among not only his friends, but others. He started selling a few of his reformed items at a flea market he goes to and said a lot of people are now coming to the market to buy his pieces. He said "I used to sell just vintage clothes at the market, but I started adding decorations on a few of them as an experiment and they sold better. I think people are attracted to them because they are unique. A lot of Korean people dress very similar to each other, but I'm glad more and more people are looking for something original and unique."
When asked what's his favourite party look, he answered "A friend of mine (CORY!) hosted a Reform School themed party, so I added sharpened pencils on shoulders and put calculators on my shoes to complete a 'stationary look'. It was so awesome." (here is a link to that party called X-Rated: http://bit.ly/ea4cEd )
His favourite items to reform are denim jackets. He usually buys them at Dongmyo market for a couple of bucks, then rips off the sleeves and add tassels, fringe or feathers to make a cool denim vest. So with no hesitation he picked a denim jacket as his subject for this project with Nylon Guys. This is how he makes a denim vest. To add to the vintage feel, cut a small hole in the arm hole and rip the sleeves off by hand then sew ivory fringe, easily found in Dongdaemun fabric market, on to the vest. After piercing through the jacket with an awl and screwing in the studs with a driver, you have a denim vest Chad Burton style.
As we were leaving he added "I always get my inspiration from flea markets and Dongdaemun fabric market because what someone throws out can be useful to me. This discarded toy dinosaur turned into a great necklace. I just try. There's no harm in trying something new and interesting." Each day is filled with confidence and challenges for him and we think he is a real Nylon guy.

chadchad of the day 0.7
navy cap sleeved blazer / reformed vintage
black & white polka-dot shirt / BON
grey shorts / Raf Simons
purple, black & grey nordic leggings / from Japan
black leather ankle boots / Aldo
silver & crystal crown brooch / vintage
Last night was the Absolute Vodka "glimmer" party at Platoon Kunsthalle, dress code: sparkling! I don't have a lot of bling in my wardrobe so I worked my outfit around this crown shaped brooch that I found at a vintage shop in Calgary a few summers ago. It had this great Sunday promotion where you can fit as much clothing as you can into a brown paper bag for only 10 dollars - holla. I also thought the polka-dots on this BON shirt were somewhat glimmery, but maybe that's a stretch. Party pics will be coming soon:)
It had originally bought the vintage school uniform blazer at Gwangjang market for W15,000 to wear at my friend Cory's X-Rated: Reform School party at Club Heaven in September. I had cut the sleeves off to make them sort of cap-sleeved, added pencils on the shoulders and push pins around the collar as studs and wore it with a school emblem style brooch. For the Absolute party I took all those accessories off and changed the gold buttons to black with a silver edge for a classier look which I'm happy about because now I can wear it more often.
The boots were basically stolen from my friend Tim. It's hard to find my size in Korea (12+US or 290~300 Korean) and he barely ever wore them so I 'adopted' them while he is traveling in Columbia. They are so comfortable, I wear them all the time and usually over my jeans. A lot of people prefer ankle boots worn under the jeans but I like these ones worn over. The nordic patterned leggings were a great find in Fukuoka, Japan last winter. I always liked the look of winter shorts & leggings and they were all over Japanese street fashion pictures I had seen. Nowadays you can find all sorts of similar styles on the streets & underground shopping centers in Seoul for W5,000 to $10,000.

chadchad of the day 0.1
black studded trench coat / Undercover (reformed)
black cropped sweater / OAK /
Grace Jones tank top / no brand
white dinosaur necklace / handmade
grey denim / J.Lindeberg
white ballet flats / no brand (reformed)
/ It's my first 'chadchad of the day'! Since I'm going to see Autokratz tonight here http://bit.ly/bfYinq I didn't want to wear a thick warm jacket so I opted for the trench coat I reformed and wore the opening day of fashion week. I bought the spikes at Dongdaemun fabric market and put them on using an awl, a hammer and a metal base. They were kind of expensive for studs, W600 each (~50 cents US) and I used around 60 of them. But I think it's 30 dollars well spent to transform a basic black jacket into something much edgier.
The dinosaur necklace is something I created as well. I've made quite a few using plastic children's toys, spray paint and gold or black chain to sell at monthly flea markets around Seoul like the Ecomarket by Cracker Your Wardrobe magazine or the Bling magazine Night Flea Market at Platoon Kunsthalle. Come to the next one on December 11th or message me and I can special order one just for you^^
check out some of the other necklaces I've made: http://www.thexoxokids.com/2010/11/platoonbling-night-flea-market-vol-14.html
The cropped sweater is one of a few things I recently ordered from Oak NYC and love. It drapes on the body so well. The jeans I've had for years and just can't give up even though they have so many patched holes in the crotch, which I'm convinced happen to all my jeans because I'm a fast walker in tight jeans. ha. The tank top is something I found in a random little shop in Toronto over the summer - there was a Karl Lagerfeld one as well which I totally should have bought. The shoes I've had for a few years as well (as you can tell by how worn in and in need of a polish they are) but just recently traded their original basic black laces for transparent ribbon, inspired by the black ballet flats I wore in the ALANI SS11 show during Seoul Collection. /
