seoul fashion week fw12 highlights

Untitled-2
Seoul Fashion Week has come and gone and for the second season in a row I wasn't able to make it over to Korea to see it for myself :(  Big time sad face for that.  I sometimes just want to stick my head in the sand and pretend that my life there never really existed so I can make the best of London, but Korea keeps on creeping into my life so forgetting about it is impossible.

Korean menswear, as I've said plenty of times before, is SFW's most successful player.  However this season some of the womenswear designers upped their game and presented really strong collections as well.  Below are a few of my FW12 favorites from the week.

Resurrection by Juyoung Lee added a military twist to her standard rock goth garments this season.  The almost floor length olive green jacket with leather sleeves above is mouthwatering perfection.

Irony Porn(o) designer Han Dong Woo presented another monochromatic collection of grey, black & white under the title 'Subversive Sexuality', showing us a mix of tailoring and somewhat unisex apparel.

Choi Bumsuk presented a very sporty & streetwear feeling collection for General Idea this season under the theme 'After Games', inspired by hero's of the 1960's Winter Olympic Games.

Groundwave is always a favorite and again presented a modern version of traditional Korean outerwear.  The quilted jackets were exceptional and the models looked heavenly as they walked barefoot amongst the clouds.

Roliat's FW12 collection was based on a functional mutation of woolen jackets and padded jumpers.  The military inspired outerwear was styled with wide trousers cropped above the ankle along with hiking boots.

Leigh, another strong menswear label, presented under the motto "Brightness co-exists with darkness, and the darker it gets, the brighter the light shines".  I love how he paired cropped coats over a longer suit jacket, something that can easily look awkward but here wear quite well.

pushBUTTON presented a loud and proud collection of pattern, oversized shapes and vivid colour.  Gotta get me a pair of those round mirror lens frames that Noma Han is rocking on the left.

Inspired by the western film 'Bandidas', Johnny Hates Jazz presented an urban cowgirl collection in mainly red & blue tones.

Opening the 3rd day of Seoul Collection, one of Korea's most celebrated designers Lie Sang Bong sent models down the runway with a large black dot on their face echoing the stone like patches found throughout the collection.  Dyed fur, sheer fabrics and lace were also dominant.

Known for their fun and light hearted presentations, Steve J & Yoni P have accumulated a large fan base in Seoul including many a celebrity who were seen in the front row.  This years 'Functional Futurism' collection was a mashup of color, pattern & texture including some fun detachable leather peplum overskirts.

roliat fw 2011/12 by hong sung wan

roliat-fw-11
Roliat designer Hong Sung Wan once again takes us back in time with his latest collection entitled 'Cambridge Double Agents'. This idea of espionage lends a darker feel to the classic British tailoring we are used to seeing from Roliat but once again there isn't enough contemporary styling to make the clothing seem exciting enough to wear, especially in the few maiden-looking women's outfits he added to the collection. Sure, if you were putting together looks for a period piece in the theatre these would be your clothes, but I don't know many guys that want to walk down the street looking like an actor from an early 20th century play. With that said, take a look at the loosely knit sweaters, vests & even fingerless gloves as well as the exterior shoulder pads on the final model of the show and you can see a bit more modernity.

Seoul Collection FW 2011/12 schedule

05서울패션위크

schedule
Seoul Collection starts next Monday! Here is the fw 2011/12 schedule, most of which will be held at SETEC and Kring again this year. I put a box around the four shows I will be walking in including Jehee Sheen, Resurrection, VanHart Homme & ALANI and I put a star next to my favorites.

Tickets can be bought at the Seoul Collection website HERE. The site is unfortunately incompatible with Apple computers and purchasing anything online in Korea is rather difficult as a foreigner, even if you can read some Korean. So get a Korean friend to help if possible as tickets are quite cheap (day passes are also available) and you can get a chance to see some amazing shows, smoking hot models & even a few celebrities in the front row.

chadchad has something to say

n633140286_6194939_4994631
/ Until now, thexoxokids.com has been a primarily visual experience of what Seoul has to offer in terms of real fashion on the streets, the always mad & ever crazy nightlife and the latest of what Korean designers have to offer on the runway. I let the pictures speak for themselves and I was happy to do just that. But for a variety of reasons, I now want thexoxokids to have more of a voice.

I've always been a bit shy about my writing, and the entire nature of blogging is putting a part of yourself on display for everyone to see. Which is why being just a photo blog appealed to me. But I seem to have a lot more time on my hands all of a sudden and I don't like that. I'm a busy person and am more creative & procrastinate less when I have a handful of things on the go at once. Being idle is my nightmare. Waiting around for something to change is a total waste of time. More and more I'm being asked by friends, readers, other bloggers and even fashion magazines & websites about my opinions on Korean designers and brands, places to shop & eat & party in Seoul, and even what to wear.  So why not speak up? And that's exactly what I'm going to do from now on.

I have a few ideas bouncing around including descriptions or how-to's of clothing I alter or outfits I put together, as well as a 'chadchad of the day' look into what I am wearing instead of just the fashion kids I find & photograph on the streets. Also I've started writing reviews on the runways shows I saw this past Seoul Collection. Click on the following links for what I thought of the men's wear this year (& of course to see the photos as well). Reviews of the women's collections are coming soon.

BON by Lee Jung Jae
MVIO by Han Sang Hyuk
D.GNAK by Kang Dong Jun
Resurrection by Juyoung Lee
Beyond Closet by Ko Taeyong
JUUN.J by Wookjun Jung
General Idea by Bumsuk Choi
Fahrenheit Homme by Du Young Jung
Groundwave by Sunho Kim & Jungeun Park
Leigh by Sang Hyun Leigh
Alani by Jae Hwan Kim
Roliat by Sungwan Hong

So here we go.  A new chapter of thexoxokids is about to begin. Big X's and big O's to all you fashion & party kids out there.  And since I'm going to be doing more talking, I expect more responses & comments from you too.  /

/ Themed after a small island in Italy called Mongibello, this collection is tailored with a slow paced, tranquil lifestyle in mind.  A mostly neutral color scheme with a few jackets in sky blues and butter yellows, the clothes were wearable for men who like retro, classy looks but were far too outdated for any modern women to wear - too bulky and unshapely and maidenly.  The knit sweaters & cardigans as well as the wide cut trousers with thick suspenders were my favourite looks and the long beige knit cardigan was the star outfit of the show. /
