The first runway show I ever saw was back in 2008 when Korean designer Han Sanghyuk was still designing for his first label BON. Since then Han, who from that first glimpse of the catwalk has been one of my favorite Korean designers, has moved onto being creative director for another label called MVIO. MVIO has put on some very far out yet very wearable collections over the past few seasons and the latest SS12 'Plasticman' presentation was no exception. Preppy, sailor meets future doctor inspired clothing were cleverly styled in quirky surgical gear with much fewer layers than we usually see from MVIO. I was happy to see Han pushing the baggy shorts over leggings look that has been popular in Korean and Japanese street fashion for quite a few years and I really loved the pastel patchwork pattern found midway through the collection. I'm not crazy about nautical stripes, but I did enjoy how he used them in the short pants suit with matching tie.  Take a look at a few of my favorite runway looks.

ps. make sure to go to the 'downloads' section of the MVIO website for free downloads of runway music mixed by DJ Eunchurn.  More, More, More is my personal favorite!

chadchad of the day 3.8

IMG_0132
black jumpsuit / General Idea
black cuff / MVIO
black boots / military
gold & crystal earring / Line or Circle
toy pony shoulders / handmade

Here's what I ended up wearing to Boy George's birthday. I didn't even find out I was going until an hour before hand, so I stole the arse ends of the two toy pony's Burger used on his hat (previous post) then made two slits in the sides to slide elastic waistband through. I then hand sewed this (easily unstitched the day after) to the shoulders of my jumpsuit from General Idea by Korean designer Choi Bum Suk. They were amazing when I danced and the pony tails were all over the place when Beyonce's 'Run the World' came on, a perfect song to dance to with power shoulders. Yep!

The black leather cuff was part of the impeccably designed invitation sent out by Korean designer Han Sang Hyuk for MVIO's spring/summer 2011 collection.

The gold & crystal earring was a gift from Korean designer Park Jong Chul from his label Line or Circle's FW 2010 collection.  I decided to change it up a bit and give it a pony tail of it's own by adding a chunk of hair from the wig Burger attached to his toy pony hat.

mvio fw 2011/12 by han sang hyuk

MVIO-fw-1112
MVIO designer Han Sang Hyuk delighted the crowd this season with a 7 foot tall headless model riding a motorized Segway down the runway in a grey checked suit. But even without this shock factor moment, his collection was creative, exciting and pushed the boundaries more than any other show in Seoul Collection this season. Dubbed 'M.I.A.S' (the MVIO Institute of Art & Science) but also known as the 'Apron Collection', it was set to a backdrop of math calculations written upon a giant chalkboard and featured badass science nerds in dark sunglasses wearing all sorts of laboratory aprons, from leather ones to aprons with toggle straps to down-filled park style aprons, my personal favorite being the navy peacoat with a rusty orange apron colored blocked into the front of the jacket. Worn both over & under or even built right into suit jackets & parkas, the aprons served as a sort of metaphor for protection or concealing one's flaws. Elements from Han's previous collections were also seen in the details such as the climbers rope from his 'Mountaineering' collection used for jacket ties & apron strings as well as mini magnifying glasses from his 'Gradation' collection hanging from some of the backpacks.

MVIO autumn winter 2011/2012 invitation

IMG_0063
Yesterday I received the invitation to the MVIO autumn winter 2011/12 collection by Korean designer Han Sang Hyuk / 한상혁. Opening his invitations is always one of my favorite parts of Seoul Fashion Week aka Seoul Collection. Previous collection invites were objects such as a magnifying glass, batteries, a carabiner & a leather cuff. They are always sensitively packaged with impeccable design & typography and this years is no exception.

Inside a crisp white box embossed with 'MVIO Institute of Art and Science' in silver lettering is what looks to be a blue book titled 'In a Dilemma' as well as a poster board with a black & white photograph on one side and graph paper on the other serving as the invitation. The theme for MVIO's 'Apron Collection' this year is 'Complex' which leaves me curious as to what goods Mr. Han has in store for the show, which will be held once again at SETEC on March 30th at 1:30pm.

Once you open the cover of the blue 'book' your eyes are assaulted with a shockingly fluorescent orange card with this inscription on the back:

IN A DILEMMA: Principles You'd Never Learn in School

These cards offer principles, drawn from subjective intuition and life experiences, you'd never learn in school. Draw just one or several cards from the shuffled pack to help you when in a dilemma. Stamped in February 2011 they are not final, as new idea from experiences yet had, will ever evolve and offer ever more solutions. My hope is these cards will inspire and encourage you when facing a dilemma. ~Han Sanghyuk

The words of advice on the cards are cute (Just accept it when your face turns red), spontaneous (Just shut the door and step outside) & sometimes a little cheesy (Take a picture of a flower. Let it speak to you), but overall remind you to step back, take a big breath and reflect on your life. With this much care & thought taken in creating an invitation, you know the collection will be even more thoughtful & well designed. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
